Marks Gate Leads The Way In New Food Composting Project
Barking & Dagenham Council publication – July 2006
Marks Gate is rapidly becoming the flagship 'eco-estate' for the Borough. Its newest form of recycling is an innovative food waste composting project, which allows residents to reduce even further the amount of waste put into black bags possibly ending up in landfill sites.
Backed by money from the Big Lottery Fund and run by East London Community Recycling Partnership (ELCRP) over 1000 residents on the estate are able to take part in this scheme.
Residents are provided with a caddie and special bran mixture which slows down the decomposing of food and stops it from smelling. The waste is then collected every week and put into a 'rocket' which turns the waste into compost which is re-used on the estate.
If this project is very successful it may be rolled out to other estates in the Borough.
