Reward for Composting
Citizen Magazine – December 2006 issue
Barking and Dagenham Council's environment department has won a silver Green Apple award for recycling kitchen waste on the Marks Gate Estate, Rose Lane, Chadwell Heath.
The service, run with East London Community Recycling Partnership (ELCRP), collects and recycles waste from more than 1,000 flats.
Cllr Milton McKenzie, executive member for sustainability, said "The project at Marks Gate is a benchmark for the type of innovative scheme we want to provide for our local communities."
"The composting centre stops valuable resources from going to landfill sites and helps enhance the local green spaces."
"Everybody involved in this scheme should be congratulated for the impact that their work has had on the local environment and economy. We want to continue to be recognised for the accessible and award winning services we provide."
Sheila Kearney, of ELCRP, said: "It is great that all the hard work and commitment of the staff working on the Marks Gate project has been recognised."
The team received the award from the independent Green Organisation, that recognises good environmental practice around the world.
